Empathy For Parents Of Drug Addicts
Let’s talk about empathy for parent of drug addicts. Being a professional in the addiction treatment space is certainly challenging as well as rewarding. I personally think that many addicts are able to succeed because they get assistance from other addicts who have recovered and are now counseling in addiction treatment. Some might say that the success of the addict might be linked to the counselor who has blazed the same path in their addiction.
Part of this journey has to be empathy. A “normie” (someone who was not addicted to drugs or alcohol) just doesn’t get it and it can be difficult for the addict to communicate their emotions to the counselor if they themselves have not been thru addiction themselves.
While the addicts get all of the “attention” there are many folks left in their wake and the families are often left to pick up the pieces. In some cases parents of drug addicts have suffered through broken families, jail, hospitalization and death. The stories are tragic and too numerous.
PODA (Parents of Drug Addicts)
While there are several forums and newsgroups on the Internet Parents of Drug Addicts (PODA) is a closed group that does not allow any advertising. The idea is to provide a forum parents asking for help and supporting one another and not have to go through the journey of addiction alone. Parents need EMPATHY. Empathy is very difficult to find within the rehab environment for parents.
